How I Control my Spending Urge Habit?

Do you have a spending urge habit and do you want to control this bad habit?

In this post, I am going to share about my spending urge habit and how I control this habit.

My spending urge habit

I noticed that I had this urge to splurge when I made a huge purchase for a particular month.

For example, I bought a digital camera for RM1,000. Then, during the same month, I made another purchase of an RM500 gold necklace.

Usually, I can control my spending habits.

But, once I made a huge purchase for a particular month, it seems like I open the door to more huge purchases. And is rather hard to control my urge from spending more money.

3 ways to control my spending urge habit

So, I control myself from further spending urge with the below methods:

1. Stop or reduce shopping frequency

Firstly is to stop or reduce my shopping frequency.

Knowing that the more I shop, the more I want to spend, this tactic calm down my need to spend more.

2. Remind me of the importance of budgeting

I am not a person who simply spends on things. But, I do admit that sometimes it can be hard to resist the urge to spend on things we love.

So, what I did was keep reminding myself of the importance of budgeting and not overspending.

3. Read and understand the spending urge habit

Another way to control my spending urge habit is by reading and understanding the spending urge habit itself.

Such as the impact of advertisements and our surroundings on our purchases.

Final thoughts

Personally, I think it is normal to occasionally have a spending urge habit. Because we are all human and we love things.

The main part is what we can do to manage and control these bad habits.

How about you? Do you have the same spending urge as me?

  1. It's Mega sell season, think that's normal. ^^ No harm to reward yourself once in a while with your entertainment savings if you see something you really like, or may come in handy with reasonable/low price. Set a spending limit, or stay away from the mall after the purchase, for me that's the best way to control.

  2. Hi Ching Ya! Yes, I agree with you, as long as not spending without limit. Stay away from the mall…. hmmm..it's hard to do la.. 😉

  3. I usually fix portion of the monthly income for entertainment fee. If I really couldn't overcome the temptation to spend on something which exceeds my monthly entertainment saving at particular month, I will check whether I save extra from the entertainment saving from previous month to offset this month expenses. If no, then I will insist not to spend..To avoid dissapointment, I will make sure I got that extra saving from previous month before I step my foot into the mall…
