A Nightmare…

Today is the 9th Day of 2012 Dragon year. For the past 2 weeks, it has been a long nightmare for our family.

My 24 years old niece is diagnosed with a kidney problem and it is at a serious stage. We visited 3 specialists including Dr Clare Tan, the Consultant Nephrologist at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH). All 3 Specialists advise for kidney dialysis.

The Specialist brought us to the dialysis centre so we can chit-chat with the patients. We visited the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) dialysis centre in Kuching as well.

The specialist said, my niece can only survive with dialysis. It has been a very painful moment for everyone in the family, especially my niece and her parents.

Normally, a kidney failure patient needs 3 times dialysis a week and about 4 hours for each session. Which means that about 12 hours a week. Each session will cost about RM200, have not included other fees and medicines involved.

Based on the information from kidney dialysis patient at the medical centre, they dialysis cost about RM4000 per month.

As of now, while waiting for the dialysis decision, my niece is taking medicine and vitamin supplement from SGH. There are packs of medicines. Besides that, my niece is also on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as well.

Many years ago, she has a kidney problem when she was about 4 years old. Traditional Chinese medicine cures her at that moment. So, now my brother is going back to the TCM.

Other than that, my brother also looking for other alternatives such as medical body massage. And yesterday met another TCM which has cured some kidney patients.

Actually, we know it is not right to mix the medicine, but we have no choice.

I really hope and pray that my niece will not need to go through dialysis. I cannot stop thinking of her condition. She is now in her final year at University Malaysia Terengganu. But, sadly we had to stop her from finishing her final semester there.

If really need to go through dialysis, another concern is the cost involved. My niece is not covered by medical insurance. Unless she managed to be accepted to NKF dialysis centre, our family won’t be able to cope with the huge medical expenses.

Even at the NKF dialysis centre, the cost needed is around RM1,000 per month, depends on the condition.

If any of you had any information which can help my niece situation, please do let me know. I thank you in advance.

  1. based from what you wrote, I assumed both kidneys failing already.
my opinion for you and your family is do not accept to do dialysis before the final stage as it will be dragged to something like "never ending" and your niece is too young for the dialysis process.
i' ll get b8 to you later with some information and suggestion.

  2. So sorry to hear about this tragic news, Yan. Will pray for your niece and her recovery. Will let you know if came across any info that might be helpful. Do take great care as well.

  3. below is reply from a 29yrs experienced GH medical doctor (previously), now he is a well-known nutritionist. from my point of view, his advice would be the best for your and your family's reference.

    [quoted]:

I am very sorry to hear such news, but there is always hope for your niece. The very first important thing is she must be always be positive. There are many kinds of kidney problems, basically dialysis is done for those with total kidney failure when the both of the kidneys of the patient fail to function totally. Optional cases are those of partial kidney failure cases where dialysis is pending.

Whatever the condition is, always follow the doctor's advice. There are dialysis patients who live a normal life only that they have to depend on dialysis for their entire life. She had to go through that.

While her health condition has to be taken care of more than what we do. Her specialists will advise her to follow the diet not that strict except that salts and other minerals must be taken with precautions. Water soluble vitamin like B-complex and BioC can be taken; the all plant protein can be given especially immediately after every dialysis. Our herbal products would not aggravate the condition and thus can be taken. She must always keep up her immune system well.

There is a herb can 水龟草, my doctor friend of mine always recommend to his patients and there are many kidney patients who try this herb have their problems improved.

anything regarding the vitamin, please take consideration to give the best for your niece, please be advised again. hope this can help.

  6. hi there, thanks a lot for the sharing. I used to have limited knowledge about kidney too (other than knowing that kidney help to remove toxin from body and sending waste water out as urine). Recently started to read more about kidney both online and offline. Visited dialysis centre too. Thanks again for the info.

I am not an expert on the kidneys, but I do know a little bit about medical strategies. First of all, natural vitamins are good, but what ever you do, do not get sucked into thinking this is the issue. You must stay in touch with qualified doctors and follow their advice. Also, I do know some people in the US who if they had financial issues went to Mexico for high quality treatment but at a fraction of the cost. The most important thing though is to ALWAYS be guided by the doctor, and no one else no matter how well-intentioned.

  8. Hi there, thank you for dropping by and for your comment. Yes, my niece now on TCM with doctor advice and with frequent medical check-up/blood test. Thanks again. Wishing all the best.

  9. Hope your niece gets well soon. TCM will be a better choice as it has fewer side effects if compared to western medicine. Take care too sis and all the best!

  10. Hi kampunginvestor, thank you and we all really pray that her kidney will be at least functioning and will no need to do dialysis. You take care too. We all must be thankful for the good health that we have at the moment.
