EPF dividend rates from 1983 to 2022

On 4 March 2023, the EPF declares a 5.35% dividend for Conventional Savings and 4.75% for Syariah Savings.

On the EPF website, it stated that EPF members may view the latest account statement (with the 2022 dividend updated) starting from 4 March 2023 (Saturday).

For your information, I managed to log in to my EPF i-Akaun on 4 March 2023 and I saw the 2022 dividend has been updated accordingly.

I shall update the historical EPF dividend rates table above from time to time.

If you wish to receive bigger EPF dividends, you may consider making an additional voluntary EEPF contribution through the EPF Self Contribution scheme. For self-employed, you may contribute through a special voluntary contribution, the i-Saraan scheme which comes scheme with a government incentive of up to RM300 per year for the year 2023.

In case you wish to know your EPF account number, you may read my post on how to check EPF number online.

And below, I share my thoughts on some of the previous annual EPF dividend rate announcements.

Posted on 1 Dec 2008: EPF Annual Dividend Rate from 1983-2007

It’s been a hot topic since 6 Nov 2008. Everyone has his/her own views on the new regulations by EPF to reduce employee contributions from the current 11% to 8% for the year 2009 till the year 2010.

Today, I am a bit curious about this coming EPF dividend rate for the year 2008. I dug out my EPF statements and did some research on the EPF website.

So, I got the list of annual EPF dividend rates from the years 1983-2007 as below:

EPF dividend rates from 1983 to 2007.
EPF dividend rates from 1983 – 2007

The EPF dividend rate has been dropping since the year 1988.

The highest was when it was first introduced, in the year 1983 with a dividend rate of 8.50%. This is impressive. Almost similar to some good-performing funds!

And the lowest dividend rate was in the year 2002 with a dividend rate of 4.25% only. This is not good for a huge fund like EPF. But, at least still better compared to a normal Fixed Deposit.

From the list, I calculated the average dividend rate for the past 25 years as 6.98%. The average return is not bad. But, looking at the dividend for the past few years (especially after the year 2000), the rate is not so encouraging.

Now, I am wondering what’s the dividend rate for this coming year – 2008. Let’s hope it’ll not be lower than 4.25%.

Posted on 22 Feb 2009: 2008 EPF Dividend Rate?

I had been frequently checking on the EPF website since early January this year for the 2008 dividend announcement.

I had also been checking on local newspapers on the announcement as well. Tonight, a piece of local tv news said that EPF will announce its 2008 dividend by next month.

I was a bit disappointed as last year, EPF announced its 2007 dividend on 31 Jan 2008.

I believe most of us, the EPF contributors are waiting impatiently for the dividend announcement. At a total contribution of 23% from our monthly wages, it’s quite a huge sum of money, isn’t it?

Let’s hope and pray for the best.

Posted on 17 Mar 2009: 4.50 % EPF Dividend Rate For 2008

As promised last month, EPF announced its 2008 dividend today. And as expected by most of us, the dividend is lower compared to the previous years, at 4.50%.

I got parts of the announcement here:

“Despite the financial meltdown, the EPF recorded the highest ever earnings of RM20 billion in gross income for 2008. This represented an increase of 9.36 per cent over the previous year’s gross income of RM18.29 billion.

Tan Sri Samsudin Osman, EPF Chairman said, “While the year 2008 was challenging due to the unprecedented global financial crisis that has impacted economies worldwide, EPF’s investment portfolio for the year performed better at the gross income level compared to 2007. However, due to the sharp decline in the equity markets, a large provision had to be made resulting in a marked reduction in net income.” “

I would say, It’s impressive for EPF to record such high earnings in 2008, despite the global financial crisis. Even though I wish for a better dividend rate, I am thankful for the 4.5%.

We hope for the best for 2009.

The dividends will be credited to its members’ accounts on 23rd March 2009, next Monday.

Posted on 5 Mar 2010: EPF Declares 5.65 Percent Dividend Rate For 2009

EPF today declares a 5.65% dividend rate for the year 2009.

That is much higher than the 2008 dividend rate which was 4.50%. EPF also announced it earlier than last year which was 17 Mar 2009.

The news also mentioned that “The dividend rate was declared on the back of the highest ever net income achieved of RM19.63 billion”. Wow… RM19.63 billion or RM19 630 000 000! Impressive! That is really a lot of money!

How I wish we will be receiving more than 8.50% because that was the highest ever declared dividend which was for the year 1983-1987. Anyway, I am thankful for 5.65%.

The 2009 dividends will be credited to its members’ accounts on 8 March 2010, next Monday.

Posted on 28 Feb 2011: EPF Declares 5.80 Percent Dividend Rate For 2010

Last Sunday, 20th Feb 2011, EPF declared a dividend rate of 5.80% for the year ending 31 Dec 2010.

The news also mentioned that EPF paid the highest dividend ever to its members.

It was not easy to gain access to EPF i-Akaun or EPF website on 21st Feb 2011. But, after a few attempts, I managed to log in. Happy to see the dividend has been credited.

For this time, thumbs up for:

  1. Higher dividend rate compared to 2009
  2. Early announcement of 2010 Dividend
  3. Prompt action to credit the dividend to its members’ account on 21st Feb 2011

We hope for a better dividend for 2011.

Posted on 5 Mar 2012: EPF Declares 6.00 Percent Dividend Rate For 2011

On 19 Feb 2012, EPF announced a dividend rate of 6.00% for the financial year ending 2011. This 6% is the highest in the last 10 years.

Many Malaysian employees said they expected this high dividend rate from EPF. I did not expect this 6.00%. So, quite happy with this 6.00%. If can see a higher dividend for 2012, that will be even better.

The dividend has been credited to its member account on 20 Feb 2012. For the first few days after the announcement, it was so hard to access the EPF website and its i-Akaun.

But after that, it was smooth and back to normal. I guess everyone is eager to see the dividend in their account.

Let’s hope for a better dividend next year!

Posted on 19 Feb 2013: EPF Declares 6.15 Percent Dividend Rate For 2012

News on last Sunday 17 Feb 2013 announced that EPF declared a 6.15% dividend for 2012. Such good news for all EPF members.

When I checked my i-Akaun that night, I saw the dividend has been credited to my account.

Keep up the good work, EPF team. And of course, we hope for a better dividend in the coming year.

Posted on 6 Mar 2014: EPF Declares 6.35 Percent Dividend Rate For 2013

It might be a bit late, but I still wish to share the news on EPF 2013 dividend rates. It is 6.35% for 2013. Quite impressive!

And as an EPF member, of course, I am very happy with the 6.35% dividend.

On the night of 16 Feb 2014, upon hearing the news from my tv screen, I tried to log in to my i-Akaun. It was very smooth and I managed to log in successfully and there was no lagging. And the dividend is already updated in my i-Akaun.

This is a huge improvement.

I remember last year, the dividend only been updated in my i-Akaun on the next day. And when I tried to log in to my i-Akaun the next day, I had to wait for quite some time as there was the message ‘the site is busy’.

This year, this is another great improvement by EPF. And I am looking forward to a more fruitful year ahead.

Posted on 7 Feb 2015: EPF Declares 6.75 Percent Dividend Rate For 2014

EPF today declares a 6.75% dividend rate For 2014. This is much better compared to last year’s dividend rate which was 6.35%.

I am a bit surprised by the high dividend rate because I was thinking the dividend rate for 2014 might dropped compared to 2013 due to the volatile market situation and a slow economy in the global market.

But, of course, I am very happy with the 6.75% dividend rate.

Based on the announcement on the EPF website, contributors may view their updated account statement via i-Akaun or check through EPF Kiosks or visit any EPF branches starting from Sunday, 8 Feb 2015.

I managed to log in to my i-Akaun and the 2014 dividend was already credited to my account. Double Thumbs Up to the EPF team for the great work done.

Let’s hope for many more fruitful years ahead.

Posted on 20 Feb 2016: EPF Dividend 2015

Today, EPF announces EPF dividend 2015 which is 6.4%. This is lower than the 2014 dividend rate which was 6.75%.

Maybe many are a little bit disappointed with the news but nevertheless, 6.4% is still better than the current bank fixed deposit interest which is around 3%.

2015 has been a tough year for Malaysians. With the implementation of GST 6% on 1 April 2015, many areas are affected. Every Malaysian can feel the impact. Personally, I am not surprised by the lower EPF dividend rate for 2015.

Not only the implementation of GST affecting the EPF dividend 2015 but there are also other factors including the slower global economy. So, all these changes do a great impact on the EPF dividends.

Upon reading, the news on The Star Online, I log in to my i-Akaun and I can see the 2015 dividend already credited to my account.

So, for i-Akaun users, you can check your 2015 dividend now. For those without i-Akaun, you can obtain your latest statement from your nearest EPF kiosks or branches.

We hope for better performance in 2016.

Posted on 21 Feb 2017: EPF Dividend Rate For 2016

On Sunday, EPF declared a 5.7% dividend for the year 2016. Compared with last year, in which the 2015 dividend was 6.4%, the 2016 dividend percentage has dropped about 0.7%.

Of course, I am hoping for a higher dividend, but I am happy with the EPF 2016 dividend rate. Last year has been a challenging year globally and locally. So, I am grateful for a 5.7% dividend rate.

I logged in to my EPF i-Akaun on the same day and my 2016 dividend has been updated in my statement.

Posted on 20 Feb 2018: EPF Dividend 2017 – The Highest Since 1997

On 10 February 2018, EPF announces that the EPF dividend for 2017 is 6.9% (konvensional saving) and 6.4% (shariah savings).

A few days before the official announcement of these EPF dividend rates, there are some postings and sharing on the internet that EPF members can expect a very good dividend rate for 2017.

This is the highest dividend rate in 20 years (since 1997).

As for me, this is the highest dividend rate I have received from EPF. Because I only joined the workforce and started my EPF contribution in 2000.

The EPF dividend rate for 2016 was 5.7%. In case you wish to view the whole list of EPF dividend rates since its inception in 1952, you can refer to the KWSP website.

Personally, I think many Malaysian are very happy with these dividend rates. Simple because it does affect our retirement planning.

With the high cost of living and increasing inflation rates, this good news does help in increasing the amount of savings in our EPF savings.

2017 EPF dividend credited to member’s account

As such, on 10 Feb 2018, I logged in to my i-Akaun and the 2017 dividend was already credited to my account.

At first, I had some difficulty accessing to EPF website. But after a few trials, I managed to log in successfully.

I guess many other EPF members also trying to access their i-Akaun to check on their latest EPF statement.

How about you? Do you have EPF i-Akaun? If yes, I suggest you log in and check for EPF dividend 2017 in your EPF account.

In case you have not registered for EPF i-Akaun, I strongly encourage you to do so.

Because EPF i-Akaun makes managing our EPF matter so much easier and simpler too.

Final thoughts on historical EPF dividend rates

In summary, the EPF dividend plays important role in preparing Malaysians for a better retirement.

A small difference in the dividend rates can have a huge impact over the years.

Nevertheless, we as EPF members can also take the initiative to have bigger EPF savings such as making an additional contribution through the EPF Self Contribution scheme.

And for those self-employed, you too can enjoy yearly EPF dividends by contributing through EPF i-Saraan.

As for the EPF team, thank you for the dividends. We hope to see continuous excellent results for the years to come.

Lastly, I hope the collection of historical EPF dividend rates above is beneficial to you.

  1. Hi NCY, as mentioned in my post above, I got it from KWSP / EPF website and I did check from my own EPF statement (for those years I started my contribution). But, a quick check from the recent KWSP website, I not able to get the data already…
