The Cost of a Nanny or Babysitter in Kuching

A nanny holding a young toddler as part of cost of a nanny or babysitter.

For this post, I will be sharing the cost of a nanny or babysitter in Kuching.

As a new parent, one thing I must admit is that a baby comes with a high financial commitment.

For me, the biggest part of the financial commitment goes to my nanny or babysitter.

I pay my babysitter RM650 per month for taking care of my baby while both my husband and me at work. Some of my friends in Kuching are paying between RM600 to RM700 per month.

What is included in my nanny or babysitter service?

So, for the RM650 that I am paying, it includes the following:

  • it is purely for looking after my baby, exclude other stuff.
  • the service is only for weekday, from Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 6:30 pm.
  • for Saturday, there will be additional charges.
    • For me, I paid my babysitter RM20 for Saturday half-day or few hours because sometimes I am required to work on Saturday morning.
  • my nanny or babysitter follows standard public holidays.
  • my nanny or babysitter will take a few days off in a year, which I am OK with it.
    • Such as when she went for a 2 days vacation with her family members, the fee is still RM650 per month, no deduction is allowed.
  • during the Chinese New Year celebration, my nanny also requests for additional off days.
    • We are Ok with it, as usually we also start working around the 5th day after Chinese New Year.
  • the service including washing baby clothes and preparing baby food such as porridge. Because some nanny does not help to wash baby clothes or cook baby food.

There is also a lot of additional set of baby needs which I need to prepare to be placed at my babysitter’s home. Such as:

  • pillow and bolster
  • bath towel
  • small towel and handkerchief
  • baby feeding bottle set
  • baby bath needs (shampoo, lotion, powder)
  • diapers

When my baby started solid food, I also provide a monthly supply of solid food such as rice for my baby. Actually, my nanny never requests me to provide rice for the baby’s porridge. But, I am doing it out of my own will.

Aside from rice, I also provide anchovies and chicken or beef stock for preparing my baby’s porridge.

Other types of nanny or babysitting service in Kuching

I heard from my eldest sister that my brother-in-law’s relative is providing a full-time nanny or babysitting service in Kuching. This means that this nanny or babysitter is taking care of the baby full-time, day and night.

The baby only goes back to his or her home during the weekends.

Or, for parents who work overseas, the baby only goes back to his or her parents when the parents are back to their hometown. The charge is around RM1,500 per month.

I’ve also heard co-workers who shared that their relatives are taking care of their babies with a monthly fee of between RM250 to RM350. This is a very reasonable amount.

As for some of my colleagues in KL, they are paying between RM800 to RM1,200 per month for childcare services. Also, they’ll need to pay a one-time RM10 or RM1 per minute for late pick-up.

So, my colleagues always ensure to pick up their babies on time to avoid these expensive fines.

Final thoughts

Despite all the above, the most important thing is we trust the babysitter will take good care of our baby while we are at work.

Of course, the best would be sending our babies to a trusted relative for a childcare centre. But, from what I see, not many are able to find an available and trusted relative as most of them are occupied.

With the above, I hope my sharing on the nanny or babysitter service in Kuching is able to provide guidelines for new parents locally.

Feel free to share in the comment how much you are paying for your childcare services.

    Danny

    1. Hello Danny, thank you for dropping by and for your comment.

Sorry that I don’t have any recommendation for nanny that come to house during office hours.

Many years before, I’ve heard of a kind nanny who comes to friend’s friend house during office hours.

But, have to be careful to avoid unwanted situation such as missing things, cash or valuable when no family member at home.
I guess the charges must be quite high too.

Have you tried asking around your housing area?
