The Cost of Giving Birth at SGH (Sarawak General Hospital)

A newborn's feet.

For this post, I am going to share the cost of giving birth at SGH (Sarawak General Hospital).

Firstly, this post has been long delayed. I must apologize for it.

At the bottom of this port, you will find me sharing my overall experience at SGH too.

Why did I decide to give birth at SGH?

So, Yes! I gave birth at SGH via emergency caesarean section or c-section in June 2016. It was an experience I will never forget.

Basically, the decision to give birth at SGH instead of other medical centres in Kuching was due to the reasons below:

1. Placenta Pravia

First of all, the nature of my pregnancy was placenta Previa. Which I hope I will share in another different post.

It is a rare and dangerous pregnancy condition whereby the placenta grows in the lowest part of the womb. In a normal pregnancy, the placenta grows at the top of the uterus.

2. Acute appendicitis

Secondly, during my second trimester, I was diagnosed with acute appendicitis at 18 weeks of my pregnancy.

My specialist immediately wrote a reference letter to SGH. Because she shared that SGH has more experience in handling acute appendicitis during pregnancy.

Also, she told me, it is very unlikely my insurance will cover my appendicitis surgery should I decide to do it at a private medical centre because I was pregnant.

The appendix surgery cost at the private medical centre could range from RM6,000 to RM8,000.

3. Save cost on delivery charges

Thirdly, earlier on, my hubby and I had spent a huge amount of our savings in the past few years for a baby, including a failed IVF treatment at a local fertility centre.

On top of the IVF, we also had a series of infertility treatments at SGH. So, we have our records there and the doctors there call my baby precious baby.

So, we hope to save some money from delivery charges.

Delivery Charges at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH)

So, what is the cost of giving birth at SGH?

The details are as below:

  • Caj Duduk Wad Kelas 3 (11 days with air condition room, 3-person sharing): RM33.00
    • Due to placenta Previa, I was arranged to admit during the 36th week of my pregnancy.
  • Ujian Makmal Kumpulan E x 2 (Lab Test): RM14.00
  • Ujian Makmal Kumpulan G x 15 (Lab Test): RM30.00
  • Kardiologi A / CTG x 2: RM10.00
  • Bersalin (Caesarean): RM100.00
    Total: RM187.00

These charges were also inclusive of my baby’s paediatric charges.

Actually, my hubby and I expected the charges will be quite high because of the emergency c-section.

We also did not ask around for charges at Sarawak General Hospital earlier.

In my opinion, the charges of RM187.00 is very reasonable with the excellent service provided by all the specialists, doctors, nurses and support staff at Sarawak General Hospital.

Overall condition at Labor Ward, Sarawak General Hospital (SGH)

Before I was admitted to SGH, I was quite worried about giving birth at SGH. Because I have heard many negative comments from friends about giving birth or delivery services at Sarawak General Hospital.

But, I was surprised that they really took good care of me throughout my stay at SGH.

And I would say they provided me with excellent service:

  • air condition room
  • continuous monitoring by experienced specialists, doctors and nurses
  • fast and prompt action when I was bleeding and required emergency c-section
  • a friendly and professional team

The only disadvantage would be the limited parking space for my husband and relatives who came and visited me.

For SGH visitors, I am sure you know how hard it is to find a parking space. Even paid parking spaces also can be hard to find.

Of course, the meals provided are normal food. I was lucky because some days, my husband or my mum or sister-in-law will bring home cook food for me.

After all, opting to go to a government hospital, we can’t expect to be pampered.

Overall, I am satisfied with the service provided by all the team from the maternity ward.

Also, I am taking this opportunity to thank all the SGH maternity ward team who had been involved in welcoming my baby. Keep up the good work!

    Hello,
Thank you for the helpful comments. Would you know if SGH accepts non-Malaysians (foreigners) for childbirth? And how much would it cost roughly?

    1. Hi Frederick,

Thank you for your kind words.

Back in 2016, I remember seeing the charges listing on the registration board for foreigners seeking medical treatment in Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), including delivery charges. But I can’t recall. All I can remember is there’s quite a difference. If not mistaken, it’s 4 figures.

Anyway, I found the FAQs on SGH official web portal. Perhaps try to give SGH a call to find out the actual charges.

      Hope this helps.
