3 Ways to Expedite IRB Tax Refund

The words 'Tax Refund' on a white keyboard.

Do you have a tax refund and wish to expedite your IRB tax refund?

If yes, read my 3 tips so you can expedite your IRB tax refund.

How long it took me to receive my tax refund?

Earlier, I had shared I received my 2014 tax refund within 3 months. While for my 2013 tax refund, it took IRB 3 weeks to refund me my overpaid tax.

For 2018, I submitted my 2017 income tax assessment in the early morning of 13 Apr 2018 (Friday). And I received my tax refund from IRB on 24 Apr 2018 (Tuesday).

So, it only took IRB about 7 working days to process my tax refund.

I would say I am very happy with the speedy tax refund by IRB Malaysia.

So far, this is the fastest of my tax refund experience.

3 tips to expedite your tax refund

To expedite your tax refund, I suggest you take note of the 3 simple tips below:

1. Submit your income tax or e-Filing earlier

Firstly, submit your income tax or e-Filing as early as possible.

And try to avoid submitting your income towards the due date. Because most taxpayers love to submit their income tax last minute.

Imagine how many taxpayer forms will need to be processed by IRB before they can confirm the tax refund for the respective taxpayer.

If you submit earlier, there is a possibility that your form will be processed first. Thus you will get your tax refund earlier too.

2. Ensure accurate bank account number

Secondly, make sure your bank account number is accurate on the e-Filing or your income tax form.

Because the refund through bank transfer definitely will be faster compared to the conventional way such as through cheques.

3. Accurate and updated email address

Lastly, make sure your email address is accurate and updated accordingly.

This is important because once the refund is processed, there is a notification email from IRB.

Among the details in the emails includes refund amount, date transferred, bank account and other taxpayer details.

If you have inquiries related to a tax refund, you may reach IRB at IRB Customer Feedback System.

I tried out this Customer Feedback System in 2015 to inquire about the status of my tax refund.

And I received a prompt reply from them to explain the delay and in the following week, IRB transferred the tax refund to my bank account.

Final thoughts

In summary, the above are 3 ways you can do your side to expedite your income tax refund.

I am sure we all hope and want to receive the tax refund as soon as possible.

So, hopefully, my sharing above will benefits those who have an income tax refund.

  1. Can anyone complete and submit manually the Borang BE of another taxpayer or must it be done by authorised tax consultants only. Bottom of Borang BE do allow another person to complete the said Borang BE?

    1. Hi Alex, Thank you for your comment. For your enquiry, it is advisable to contact IRB directly. It is better not to make an assumption on the matter related to tax submission.

  2. My name is Lim Choon Lai. I filed my income tax on the 28th of April, 2021 and the tax return I am supposed to get is RM932.64. My friends from the same company had submitted theirs and they had received their tax return. As of today, I am still waiting for mine. There is no feedback whatsoever from LDHN and I am starting to get worried. No doubt the amount is not big but during this pandemic, it does come in handy. Please advise.

    1. Hi Lim Choon Lai,

      Thank you for your comment.

You may try reaching out to LHDN through LHDN Customer Feedback. Look for Application > Tax Refund.

Last year during MCO, I sent an enquiry to LHDN as well. I received a reply about 2 months later. You may try using the LiveChat on MyTax Portal during office hour (Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm).

      Hope this helps.
