Registration of Marriage in Kuching: The Cost and The Process

Dave and I completed our registration of marriage in 2009 at Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara, Kuching Branch.

In case you are planning to get married and have no idea where and how to register your marriage, the guidelines below might be helpful.

I’ll also share the cost of registration of marriage in Kuching.

Guidelines on registration of marriage in Kuching

Before I share further, I would like to clarify that the guidelines below are based on our registration of marriage in 2009:

  1. Prepare a passport size for both applicants.
    • Preferably with a blue background.
  2. Prepare a photostat copy of NRIC and birth certificate for both applicants.
  3. Bring the above with the original NRIC and birth certificate and go to the nearest Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara (JPN).
  4. Both applicants will need to complete JPNKC02 form.
  5. Choose to complete the marriage registration at JPN or at church or Chinese association.
    • For us, we choose to complete the marriage registration at JPN.
  6. The marriage application will be displayed for 21 days on a medium-size notice board, located Kuching JPN.
  7. The officer printed a letter to us, informing us of the marriage registration date and time and also the attire for the marriage registration.

So, we need to wait for the marriage application to be displayed for 21 days on the notice board.

As for the marriage registration date, you can adjust it but it must be after 21 days. But, preferably, the majority of couples just follow the given date. Because there are many others who are on the list.

Guidelines on marriage registration day

And these are the guidelines on the marriage registration day based on our experience in 2009:

  1. On the marriage registration day, go to the same office, bring along two witnesses.
    • All applicants and witnesses must wear formal and for man, must wear a necktie.
    • And all applicants and witnesses must bring along their NRIC as well.
    • Upon arrival, present all documents to the officer, where she’ll prepare the marriage certificates.
    • There will be other couples. It is based on first come first serve basis.
  2. Then, make a payment of RM30.00.
  3. After that, wait for your turn.
    • An officer will call for the applicants’ name.
    • She will read marriage vows and advice to all four.
    • Then the groom and bride take a turn to read a readily prepare wedding vows.
  4. Then all four will sign on marriage certificates.
    • The bride and groom will each have a copy of the certificate.
    • And couples can choose to exchange their wedding rings here as well.
  5. With that, you’re officially married now.

For more information on marriage registration, you can refer to the Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara website.

And for those from Kuching, you may contact these phone numbers:

  • JPN UTC Kuching: 082-258221
  • JPN Sarawak at Bangunan Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang: 082-234054

For those from other areas, you may check the branch office address on the JPN website.

Final thoughts

Even though our marriage certificates only cost RM30 in 2009, but these certificates are an important part of us as a married couple. These marriage certificates protect our rights.

Besides, the government hospital also requires the marriage certificate as a supporting document before the mother and her newborn baby can be discharged from the hospital.

With that, I hope my sharing on registration of marriage above is beneficial to those planning to register their marriage in Kuching or other places in Malaysia.

  1. I experienced to be my friend's witness last year and I noticed the groom & bride did not read any wedding vows. Instead, they just need to answer when the officer asked them few questions. The whole process which include queeing for your turn, vowing ceromony took around one hour plus only.Congratulation Yan!

  2. Hi Margaret, thanks for dropping by. My bro & sis-in-law who got married in 2006 also have to 'angkat sumpah' like Dave and me :p Your friend's wedding also at Satok JPN? Oh! Thank you 🙂 So nice of you!

  3. Margaret, sorry… today i double check with my sis-in-law, she said she not need to 'angkat sumpah' but just need to follow the wedding vows read by the officer. Maybe the angkat sumpah parts is a new rule. Thanks for sharing ya!

  4. Hi there, for Selangor, do ring the JPN at there office in Selangor. Perhaps better if you can go to their office and meet the officer there to ask them for more details. Hope this help. BTW, congratulations 🙂

  5. i've got question, what if the groom is not sarawakian but from the other state, selangorian, how should groom and bride get the registration of marriage successfully?
much appreciate if you can reply.
    thanks

  6. Yes, it's my pleasure. Hope you will be able to get the info and assistance you need. Wishing you a blessed Christmas and a happy new year too.

  7. hi, the whole process take less than a month. so, you have plenty of time. I think you can ask with the officer if they hold special marriage registration for 11-11-11. All the best!

  8. Hi, very sorry for the late reply… You can find the recent updates on JPN website at http://www.jpn.com.my. The Satok one relocates already. Yes, it's compulsory to have a witness each from bride and bridegroom. You can bring others to the registration of marriage but one witness name for each bride and bridegroom will be needed on the registration of marriage form. These witnesses will be printed in your marriage registration form as well. hope this helps.

  9. hi, I want to know where is the JPN Kuching Branch? I can't seem to find it. Plus, is the limit of witnesses 2 or can we bring more of them? Is it compulsory to have a witness?
