5 Considerations Before Quitting Your Job

For this post, I will be sharing 5 considerations before quitting your job.

Throughout the employment journey, you may feel like you want to quit your current job and go for our dream job. Or just to take a mini-retirement to refresh your life.

Before you make the decision, read my 5 considerations before quitting your job.

5 considerations before quitting your job

I listed below, some of the important things to consider before quitting your existing job.

1. Your current financial commitment

The first on my list is listing down your current financial commitment. Such as:

  • housing loan
  • car loan
  • monthly utility bill ( water, electricity, phone, cable tv, broadband)
  • groceries bill
  • insurance premium
  • kids expenses (school fees, tuition fees)

Unless you have other sources of income, you are likely to have to use your savings to cover your expenses and financial commitment while you are out of work.

Before you tender, make sure you have enough to cover your expenses until the next paycheque.

And you must be aware that, while you don’t have your regular income, you are also spending your savings.

2. Your new employment

Sometimes you just feel like you want to quit and don’t want to think about other things.

I can understand that.

But, in real life, you should really think and plan for your next step. So, when you are really stressed out and really cannot go on, take a step back.

Perhaps apply for a few days leave and spend some time alone.

Take the opportunity to think and I really meant think hard and plan for your roads ahead. At the same time, try to survey around such as browsing Jobstreet for new employment opportunities before throw that quitting letter to your boss.

3. Staff benefits that you might miss out

Currently, most employment in Malaysia come with additional employee benefits such as:

  • group medical and insurance coverage
  • optical and dental benefits
  • company share benefits (ESOS)
  • lower interest rates (banking sector)
  • petrol allowance
  • company vehicle

If you really planning to quit, make sure you include the above expenses in your budget. Another benefit would be a company’s performance bonus.

So, planning your quitting will be more justified for you. If you know your company is giving away a bonus, try to plan to quit after you’ve received the bonus.

Unless you really don’t care about the bonus (which I think most of us do care).

4. Your reason for quitting

You can just tell others (your spouse, your parents, siblings, kids, friends, relatives, neighbours, your customer, your business associates) you quit your job because it’s too stressful. Or you can’t take it anymore.

But, this does not sound cool. Thus, find a good reason to tell why you decided to quit.

So, embarking on a new employment opportunity is really a more professional way to tell others why you quit.

5. The unattached period

If all this while you’ve been occupied with your work, it is going to be tough for you to just sit around and doing nothing.

Perhaps for the first few days or perhaps weeks, you’ll be feeling so happy that you can wake up at any time you wish, you no need to face or hear your bosses, no need to face that difficult colleague or annoying customer.

But, as time goes by, you’ll start to feel stress for being too free and have nothing to look forward to.

So, it is important to know what you want to do during your unattached period.

Maybe cultivate some new hobbies or visit some friends or relatives which you’ve wished you can do but could not make it previously due to your busy work life.

Don’t be surprised if you started to miss your work or your stressful time at work, especially a few months after you’ve quit. Unless you can find something which you really enjoy or something better, you are likely to miss something at your previous employment.

Final thoughts

It is easy to quit a job. But, it is of utmost importance to consider the impact of quitting your job. Especially if you quit your job without a new opportunity, be it new employment or venture into entrepreneurship.

I hope the above sharing on 5 considerations before quitting your job is beneficial to you.

Feel free to add in any other things to consider before quitting your job. I would love to add them to the list.

Cheers and all the best always!
