How to check EPF number?

For EPF members residing in Malaysia, below are seven ways you can check your EPF number.

1. EPF i-Akaun

The first option is retrieving your EPF or KWSP number through EPF i-Akaun.

If you have activated your EPF i-Akaun, you can just log in to your i-Akaun. The EPF number is under ‘My Profile‘.

You may refer to the screenshot from my EPF i-Akaun below.

EPF number shown under i-Akaun's 'My Profile'.

If you have forgotten your i-Akaun login details (username and/or password), you can request to reset the details through SMS. Make sure you are using the same mobile phone number during your EPF registration.

In case you have changed your mobile phone number to a new number, you can update EPF with your latest phone number at EPF Kiosk or EPF counter. Else, you won’t be able to receive the Transaction Activation Code (TAC) through SMS. You’ll need the TAC to proceed with the login.

Those of you who has not registered for EPF i-Akaun, I encourage you to do so as the i-Akaun shall make things related to EPF a lot easier and faster.

2. EPF live chat

Recently I found out that you can check your EPF or KWSP number through EPF live chat.

Live chat on EPF website.
EPF live chat

Here is the step-by-step to check your EPF number via live chat:

  1. Go to the EPF website.
  2. Click on the ASK ELYA icon on the lower right of your screen.
  3. Click on the Live Chat button.
  4. Type in your first name, last name, and email address accordingly.
  5. Choose the chat subject (I chose EPF Office/Self-Service Terminal).
  6. Verify the information on the screen (name, email, chat subject). And wait for the EPF service advisor to join the chat.
  7. When the service advisor joins the chat, type your question “Can I check my EPF number?”.
  8. Follow the instructions by the service advisor accordingly to get your EPF number.

In my case, she asked for my full name and MyKad number (NRIC). Shortly after that, she provided me with my EPF number.

You may refer to the screenshot of the live chat below.

Based on my experience, the whole process took about four minutes. Which I consider very fast and efficient.

Below are some tips when using the live chat to check your EPF number:

  • The Ask Elya chatbot is available 24 hours a, but you can only get your EPF number through a live chat with the EPF service advisor during office hours.
  • use Google Chrome (desktop and mobile) to access the live chat. I can’t access the chatbot using my Samsung Internet, but I don’t have a problem using Google Chrome from my mobile.

Do take note, the live chat response is depending on the number of enquiries received. So, if they are handling a high volume of live chat enquiries, there could be a delay in responding to your request.

3. Your salary slip

Thirdly, if you’ve received your salary from your employer, you may be able to see your EPF number stated on your salary slip.

Generally, most salary slips come with EPF numbers including some of the other details such as:

  • Employee and employer EPF contributions
  • Employee and employer SOCSO number and contributions
  • Income tax number and income tax deductions

So, you may check your EPF number from your salary slip.

4. Employer HRD or ESS

Next, you may ask your current employer’s Human Resource Department (HRD) for your EPF number.

Your HRD should have all the details of its employee including EPF number. If it’s your new employer, you may need to ask your previous employer’s HRD to provide you with your EPF number.

If your employer provides online Employee Self-Service (ESS), you can get your EPF number through the online portal as well.

Generally, you’ll need to log in to the ESS. You should be able to find your EPF number under your profile.

5. EPF Self Service Terminal (SST)

You may also visit your nearest EPF Self Service Terminal (SST) or kiosk to check your EPF or KWSP number.

Check EPF number from EPF statement through EPF Self Service Terminal (SST).

When you are at the EPF SST, choose to print your EPF statement. This is where you can see your EPF number stated on the EPF statement.

For that purpose, you can visit the EPF website to know the location of the KWSP SST nationwide. Do check their operating hours as most of the SSTs are only available during office hours.

And remember to bring along your MyKad. You’ll need your MyKad for verification before you can print the statement.

6. Local EPF offices

Other than the methods mentioned above, you may also check your EPF number by visiting your local EPF counter during office hours.

Do remember to bring along your MyKad for verification.

If you only want to know your EPF number, I would suggest you try out the Self Service Terminal (SST) as mentioned earlier. This would be faster and more convenient.

If you want to have a face-to-face session with the EPF officer, be prepared to spend some time at the EPF counter before you can get your EPF number.

7. EPF online enquiry

Lastly, you can send an online enquiry through the EPF website to check your EPF number.

You may refer to the screenshot below on EPF online enquiry.

Make an enquiry through EPF online enquiry system.

Once submitted, you’ll receive a reference number sent to your email, in which you can check the status of your enquiry. The response time depends on the volume of enquiry received.

Based on my experience with EPF online enquiry, I received their replies within a few working days.

So, please be patient and allow the EPF team some time before they can get back to you on your EPF number.

How to check EPF number with IC online?

Are you wondering if you can check your EPF number with IC online? Yes, you can do so.

Here are three ways you can check your EPF number online with NRIC.

1. Through a live chat with the EPF service officer

As mentioned earlier in item 2 above, you can check your EPF number with NRIC using the EPF live chat.

As long as you can get access to the EPF website, you’ll be able to use the live chat (during office hours) to get your EPF number.

2. Through EPF i-Akaun

You can check your EPF number with IC online through EPF i-Akaun with the conditions below:

  • you have registered for EPF i-Akaun earlier
  • you are still using the same handphone number during your EPF registration (for SMS TAC purposes)

With the above details, you can request EPF to reset your EPF i-Akaun user ID and/or password online. Once you’ve got your i-Akaun login details, you may log in to your i-Akaun and retrieve your EPF number.

If you’ve changed your handphone number, you will need to update your new handphone number through the EPF SST.

3. Through EPF online enquiry

You can also check your EPF number with IC online by submitting an online enquiry through the EPF website. You may refer to method 7 mentioned above.

But, the disadvantage of this method is that you can’t immediately get your EPF number. You may need to wait for a few working days for EPF’s reply.

So, if you don’t mind waiting, you can check your EPF number online through EPF online enquiry.

How to check EPF number from abroad?

If you are residing outside of Malaysia (such as in Singapore, the US or UK) and you want to know your EPF number, it may be inconvenient for your to visit the local EPF SST and offices.

Alternatively, you may reach out to the EPF team through live chat (refer to item 2 above) or submit an online enquiry through the EPF website (refer to item 7 above).

Just make sure you provide your personal details correctly, especially your IC number and your full name.

For online enquiry, please allow the EPF team a few working days before they are able to get back to you on your EPF number.

Why I don’t have an EPF number?

If you don’t have an EPF number, it means you are not registered with EPF. Don’t worry, if it is your new employment, your employer will help you to register your EPF.

If you are self-employed or would like to do EPF self-contribution, you can easily register as an EPF member using any of the methods below:

  • Through KWSP i-Akaun mobile app
  • Through EPF Self Service Terminal (SST) nationwide
  • Register at EPF offices nationwide

Just bring along your NRIC (MyKad). Once successful, you’ll receive a notice with your EPF number.

An example of EPF number

Are you wondering what an EPF number looks likes? As of the time of writing, Malaysian EPF numbers consist of 8 digits numbers. For example, 12345678.

Is the EPF number the same as the KWSP number?

Yes, EPF (Employees’ Provident Fund) number is the same as KWSP (Kumpulan Wang Simpanan Pekerja) number.

Can you have more than one EPF number?

No, each EPF member only has one EPF number.

EPF members use the same EPF number for all matters related to EPF, such as:

In case you found out you have more than one EPF number, you will need to contact EPF so that EPF can consolidate your contributions accordingly.

Final thoughts

In summary, I find the easiest and fastest way to check your EPF or KWSP number is through i-Akaun. If you haven’t register for an i-Akaun, I hope you manage to check your EPF number through the other six methods mentioned above.

  6. ( I am malaysian and work at oversea )I use KIOSK apply ahli KWSP. After that get a ahli number. So, how to know under what EPF account type? I saran , I suri or self- contribution?
need to apply again? or no need. I
bank in use KWSP 6A 1 form ( is if correct ?)

    1. Hi KLC,
My answers to your questions as below:
      1) We all only have one EPF number, it is just different type of contribution.
      2) For i-Saraan: Only for those below 55 years old and NOT receiving regular income. Malaysian working overseas eligible to apply for i-Saraan. Even though you already an EPF member via KIOSK registration, you still need to visit the nearest EPF office to apply/register for i-Saraan. Because there is a 15% contribution incentive from the government (maximum RM250 a year)until year 2022.
      3) For i-Suri: Also need to apply again. But, i-Suri is only for a selected group of women who is registered under e-Kasih.
      4) For Self contribution: NO need to apply again. All EPF members can make self-contribution, maximum RM60,000 a year. The difference with i-Saraan is, there is NO government incentive.
      5) If you make your contribution over the counter, you will need to submit your contribution together with KWSP form: Form KWSP 6A(1) is for EPF self-contribution. And form KWSP 6A(2) is for i-Saraan. I suggest you use online banking because there’s no form needed. Currently, online banking is available for Maybank, Public Bank, CIMB Bank and Kuwait Finance House.

Before you do any transaction, I would suggest you to activate your EPF i-Akaun so that you can get online access 24 hours to your EPF account.

Lastly, I suggest you to read my post on EPF Self Contribution, EPF i-Saraan and how I made my i-Saraan online through Public Bank online and Maybank2U.

      Hope the above helps.
