Why SOCSO or PERKESO is Important for Malaysian Employees?

For this post, I will be sharing why SOCSO or PERKESO is important for Malaysian employees.

Other than EPF, all Malaysian employers and employees must register for SOCSO. Both employers and employees are also required to contribute to the scheme on a monthly basis.

If you wish to check the rates of SOCSO contributions, you can read them on the SOCSO website. Basically, the contribution rate is based on your monthly wage.

Perhaps the small contribution amount from our monthly payslip is not that significant.

For example, at the present time, the highest contribution by the employee is RM19.75 per month. That is for a monthly wage of RM4,000 and above.

But, undoubtedly, it is of utmost importance for us to contribute to SOCSO.

Why SOCSO or PERKESO is important for Malaysian employees?

SOCSO is just like insurance at work. In other words, workers are protected when they are at work.

Generally, SOCSO protection covers the following:

  • industrial accidents
  • commuting accidents
  • accidents during emergency
  • occupational diseases

If you wish to know the protection in detail, you can refer to the full list on the SOCSO website.

Certainly, I am amazed by the protection provided by SOCSO.

So, all employers and employees must take SOCSO seriously. At least, when accidents happened while we are at work, the scheme provides some coverage on medical benefits.

Other than medical benefits, it also covers temporarily or permanent disability, dependants’ benefit or funeral benefits.

As such, all employers must ensure their employees are registered with SOCSO. Most importantly, the employer must pay the monthly contribution accordingly.

In case something happened to your employee while he or she is at work, SOCSO will be able to cover some parts of the medical expenses.

Meanwhile, for employees, please check your monthly payslip for the SOCSO contributions. Do make sure you have provided the correct SOCSO number to ensure the contribution is credited to your SOCSO account.

Or the best alternative would be registering for an iPERKESO account to view your SOCSO contribution online. After all, it only takes a few minutes for a SOCSO member to register iPERKESO online.

In case there are discrepancies, feel free to contact SOCSO customer service number at 1300 22 8000 (Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm).
